Dear C2C Community Leaders,
Over the last few weeks, residents from across the city have come together to talk about the services and programs that make Toronto the city we love. While consultants KPMG suggested that the services supported by the Community Partnership and Investment Program (CPIP) could be eliminated or reduced, record numbers of Torontonians have asked their councillors to maintain and expand city services.
On July 28th, 340 of us registered to make passionate deputations to the City Executive Committee about the value and importance of community services and programs funded by the city. We heard deputant after deputant talk about these services as the ‘must-haves’ that make the city more equitable, vibrant, healthy and prosperous and a desirable place to work, play and call home. The deputations from community members continued through the night, and for almost 22 hours, the vast majority advised the committee against cuts to services. Thank you to all those who spoke up at City Hall through written and spoken deputations – your commitment to Toronto is truly inspiring. Many people have been energized by this show of community support for city services – joining or helping to form a local ward team is the perfect way to stay involved! For the last few months, ward teams have begun to form and grow in wards across the city. Residents are coming together to learn about what’s happening at City Hall and to talk about the impact reduced services could have on their families, their neighbours and the communities within their ward. People are talking about building community power and about speaking to their local councillors about protecting the CPIP programs and services that address inequities faced by women, youth, seniors, people with disabilities, newcomers and LGBTQ communities. Join or form one of these teams with support from the C2C campaign – email email@example.com to get involved!
As part of a ward team, you will be able to prepare for key events coming up at City Hall. September will be a busy month. We should all register to depute on the impact of the recommendations from the City Manager’s report to Executive Committee on Monday September 19, 2011 at 9:30 am. Register by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 416-392-6627.
On Monday September 26 & Tuesday September 27, City Council will be meeting to vote on whether to accept or reject Executive Committee’s proposed cuts to community services. The Community Development and Recreation Committee will also be holding community consultations on September 12-13th and will be accepting deputations on Wednesday September 14th. Visit www.commitment2community.org for a list of ward team meetings and other useful info.
C2C will also be participating in events and trainings over the next 8 weeks. We hope you will join us and continue to take action on your commitment to community – please keep in touch & stay tuned for more details!
