We encourage you to make a spoken and written deputation. A complete list of special standing committee dates and registration info is attached to this message. Please circulate this message and the attached list widely, especially to your contacts within diverse faith communities, local businesses, educators, young people and seniors and encourage them to speak about the importance of city programs to their communities.
Starting Monday July 18th, special standing committees will be held to discuss KPMG consultants’ reviews of all city services, service levels and service standards. These reviews include potential options and opportunities for savings, with KPMG’s evaluation of associated risks, implications and timeframes.
Recommendations on whether to make cuts to the city grants programs will be made during the special Community Development & Recreation Standing Committee on Wednesday July 20th at 9:30 am in Committee Room 1 AND at a special meeting of Executive Committee on Thursday July 28th at 9:30 am in Committee Room 1. Deputing at these meetings, provides a chance for community members like you to impact the final funding recommendations that the city manager will recommend to the Executive Committee on September 19, 2011.

The community grants include
- Access, Equity and Human Rights, which provide money to groups working on issues related to “race relations, gender equity, literacy, disability, sexual orientation, and Aboriginal affairs”
- Community Safety, for groups that work to prevent violence in priority neighbourhoods
- Community Recreation, for groups “providing activities that address gaps in available services provided by city recreation services”
- Community Festivals and Special Events
- Community Service Partnership grants, for groups working to improve access to services “that improve social outcomes for vulnerable, marginalized and high-risk communities.”
- AIDS Prevention Community Investment
- Drug Prevention Community Investment
These grants fall under the Community Partnership Investment Program or CPIP. The money allocated in these grants support the following activities:
- community festivals and events (e.g. Grange Festival in the Park, Kingston-Galloway Community Festival Market – and many more across the city each year)
- community/neighbourhood mediation
- community safety initiatives
- emergency planning and preparedness
- children’s literacy, arts and recreation programs
- youth leadership development and entrepreneurial supports
- youth drop-ins
- youth summer employment projects
- community access to computers and free use of office machines (fax, photocopier)
- computer training
- free income tax clinics
- free or low-cost access to meeting and program spaces in the community
- seniors recreation (dance, singing, fitness, walking)
- elderly person’s centres (workshops, support groups, drop-ins, self-help groups)
- adult drop-ins
- volunteer recruitment and support
- music lessons for low-income families
- safe walk home programs
- youth recreation (basketball, dance, boxing, fitness, weight training, bicycling, camping)
- seniors health and wellness (Tai chi classes, social support, group field trips, congregate dining)
- after-school homework and recreation programs for youth
- summer camp, march and winter break programs for children and youth
- hundreds of community arts activities (dance, music, photography, film, community theatre)
