CPIP Funding Saved in Final Budget Vote!

Dear Friends of C2C,

Commitment 2 Community is very happy to report that  on January 17th, City Council voted against a proposed 10% cut to community grants for social service and health programs funded through the Community Partnership and Investment Program (CPIP).  The previous week, the Executive Committee safeguarded funding for arts programs provided through CPIP as well.  The proposed CPIP cut, amounting to $4.7 million, would have affected hundreds of vital programs, with terrible consequences for communities across Toronto.

Congratulations to everyone who took action on proposed budget cuts by forming ward teams, contacting councillors, making deputations at all hours, signing petitions and encouraging friends and neighbours to take action!  The retention of 100% of CPIP funding is a significant acheivement for communities across Toronto and for everyone who took action on the 2012 budget. Councillors who voted against the cut – including Colle, Lindsay Luby and Lee – stated their decisions were influenced by significant feedback from residents of their wards.  Your commitment to community was heard loud and clear by 23 City Councillors who voted to save CPIP and other city services. Councillors…

Take Action on the 2012 Budget!

Dear Friends of C2C,

Happy New Year! We hope you are in good health and spirits this first week of 2012.

As part of our commitment to community, we each need to stay the course and act on our concerns about the impact of proposed budget cuts to cherished community services and programs. Right now, a 9.8% budget cut to the Community Partnership and Investment Program (CPIP) is still on the table. Cuts to CPIP will have real, detrimental impacts on our city – they will increase homelessness, make life even harder for women, children, youth, seniors, immigrants and the many residents of the city who are low income, live with chronic illness, are racialized, LGBTQ and disabled. You can learn what’s proposed in the 2012 budget by reading 2012 City Budget: Proposed Service Cuts and User Fee Increases.

It is important to note that the city budget process is not over and that no final decisions about the proposed budget cuts have been made yet. The budget committee will do a final wrap up on January 9th and on January 12th Executive Committee will decide what goes before city council when all 44 councillors and the mayor vote on the budget from January 17-19th. You can read the 2012 City Budget Year-End Update to learn where the budget process is at before the committee reconvenes January 9th.

Councillor Budget Forums

Several City Councillors are organizing local budget events for their constituents.  These town halls are an important opportunity for residents to get informed, discuss the issues and let their Councillors know about their priorities for the ward and the city before the final budget vote at Council’s January 17-19 meeting.  Take part, share your views and find out where your Councillor stands on the issues.

If your Councillor is not holding a local budget event, give them a call or send an email to encourage them to do so.  It’s not too late for Councillors to reach out to their constituents about these important issues.

Not sure who your Councillor is or which ward you’re in?  Call 311 (open 24/7) or check online here

Thank you for your commitment to community in 2011

Dear Friends of C2C,

Before 2011 draws to a close, we wanted to be sure to offer you a city budget wrap-up, an idea of how to take action around proposed budget cuts in January and, of course, wish you a safe and healthy new year.

Thank you for your commitment to community in 2011. Together, concerned city residents have effectively pushed back against many cuts to community services and programs through record numbers of deputations and emails, visits and phone calls to our local councillors this year.  You can read the 2012 City Budget Year-End Update for more on how the city budget process wrapped up for the year.

It is important to note that no final decisions have yet been made on this budget. All 44 City Councillors and the Mayor will vote on the budget cuts from January 17-19th 2012. A full list of proposed budget cuts can be found in the 2012 City Budget: Proposed Service Cuts and User Fee Increases.

Community residents’ last opportunities to contact city councillors with concerns about the budget will be before council meets from January 17-19th. We will be following up with you in January, but we wanted to leave you with a ‘To Do’ list to keep in mind for the new year:

  1. Call or email your City Councillor to express your concerns about budget cuts. Make sure that everyone you know does the same –messages from concerned community members make a real difference to councillors and sends them a strong message to vote against cuts.
  2. As early as January 2nd, an electronic petition to councillors will be ready for circulation and signatures from those who wish to save the community services and programs from cuts. You will find the petition at www.togethertoronto.ca, where it will join existing petitions related to the hardship fund, children’s services, TTC, arts, and museums.
  3. Organize a group of residents from your ward to visit with your city councillor. Dial 311 to find out who your councillor is and to contact their office to arrange a visit.

C2C wishes you the very best for a safe and happy new year. We look forward to speaking to you in 2012 and to working together again to build stronger, healthier communities for all of Toronto’s residents.

Your Friends from C2C

P.S.  Many of the proposed cuts will affect children and youth.  Visit www.kidscounttoronto.ca for more information on the campaign to reverse the cuts to children’s services.
